About Us:
Since 1951, the Federal Highway Research Institute BASt has been a research organisation within the remit of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). Our mission is to contribute to the improvement of safety, environmental compatibility, economic efficiency and performance in the road and transport sector. With around 400 employees and an annual budget of around 51 million euros, we work on around 260 of our own research projects every year. In addition, we supervise over 300 research projects carried out by external scientists.
In addition to research, BASt performs testing, certification, approval and recognition tasks in the field of road safety. On behalf of the BMDV, we support the introduction of national, European and international legislation and harmonisation procedures.
With our scientific staff, we are represented in around 830 national and international committees. BASt is a member of ECTRI (European Conference of Transport Research Institutes), FEHRL (Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories), FERSI (Forum of European Road Safety Research Institutes) and the Working Group of Departmental Research Institutes in Germany, among others. We have existing cooperation agreements with numerous international institutions, not only in the US but worldwide.
