Already in January 2020, the fourth international branch of the HPI Research Schools was opened at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). But the official opening ceremony had to be postponed again and again due to the Covid-19 pandemic. On November 4, 2022, it could finally be made up for.

As a result, it drives technological change and the emergence of new markets and industries.

Understanding Artificial Intelligence

Whether it is a digital assistant on a smartphone or tablet, or smart speakers, just what goes on behind the scenes of AI-controlled systems usually remains hidden from their users. The concept of co-construction promises to change this: in the interchange of questions and answers, humans and intelligent systems are meant to arrive at joint explanations for the knowledge contained in these machines. Since 2021, this topic has been a major topic of research at the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre TRR 318 ‘Constructing Explainability’, a joint endeavor of Bielefeld University and Paderborn University.

Making Artificial Intelligence Sustainable

SAIL is an interdisciplinary AI research network created by Bielefeld University, Paderborn University, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. SAIL addresses the next stage of AI development by looking at the entire life cycle of AI systems and their technological and societal impacts. The interdisciplinary research program brings together researchers from AI, engineering as well as the social sciences and humanities.
