HPI and MIT Collaborate Through New Joint Research Program “Designing for Sustainability”
On November 2, Hasso-Plattner-Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) signed a collaboration in New York City that aims to tackle global societal challenges as expressed in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program will drive joint scientific research at both institutes in the areas of sustainable design, innovation, computer science and digital technologies, as well as in the translation of research results into practice.

Bielefeld UAS is Member of Campus OWL, a network of five higher education institutions in OstWestfalenLippe (OWL), Germany, with a liaison office in New York and main supporter of DWIH New York.

A Circular Economy for More Sustainable Product Development – Project “ZirkuPro”
Manufacturing mechatronic products is associated with high energy demand, critical raw materials, and complex manufacturing conditions. One way to solve this problem is through a circular economy, which makes it possible to conserve resources and ensure sustainable development. Researchers from Paderborn University and the Fraunhofer Institutes IEM (Paderborn) and IZM (Berlin) are currently working to extend this principle to an integrated circular product development process for intelligent technical systems.

The annual DWIH focus topic “Sustainable Innovations” encapsulates a broad range of applications, so the DWIH New York Team wanted to experience what this could look like on the ground. The team went on a field trip to Governors Island, located in the New York Upper Bay, to learn about local sustainability initiatives.

MONOCAB-OWL – A Visionary Monorail Vehicle for a New Mobility
The project MONOCAB-OWL was initiated to create an innovative monorail vehicle for sustainable mobility in rural areas. It’s a joint project of OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, Fraunhofer IOSB-INA and the Landeseisenbahn Lippe (e. V.).
