The vice-president for IT and chief information officer (CIO) of Indiana University, Rob Lowden visited Universität Hamburg on June 5, 2024. Discussions and a tour of the DESY premises provided him with insights into the Universität Hamburg digitalization and IT strategy.

Universität Hamburg and the University of Indiana signed a strategic partnership in 2019 but have been working closely together since 1966. In addition to existing cooperation projects between faculties and disciplines, like for example joint teaching projects as part of the Global Classroom Program, focus will turn to also include cybersecurity measures.

Rob Lowden made the most of meetings including with Prof. Dr Hannes Federrath from the Security and Privacy department as well as at a meeting with University president Prof. Dr Hauke Heekeren, head of administration Dr Martin Hecht, vice president Prof. Dr Tilo Böhmann, CDO Prof. Dr Sebastian Gerling and Prof. Dr Volker Gülzow, to find out about the technology-intensive research infrastructure and IT security at Universität Hamburg, as well as research, teaching, and studies in computer science, political science and security and peace research.  The goal is to identify opportunities for cooperation across both universities, and thereby increase the skills and expertise at Universität Hamburg.

A reciprocal visit has already been planned for July 2024 that will see Tilo Böhrmann and Sebastian Gerling travel to Indiana University to continue the successful collaboration.
