DAAD Provides Annual Scholarship Funding to Eight Students from the Global South of the Master in Environmental Governance
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) will fund the M.Sc. Environmental Governance program at the University of Freiburg with a total of 1.6 million euros from 2025 to 2032. This is the third, eight-year funding period for the course in the DAAD program “Development-Related Postgraduate Courses” (EPOS).
Geographical and cultural diversity
The funding will go toward scholarships for students from the Global South in particular. The scholarships will enable eight students each year to take the master’s program in Environmental Governance at the University of Freiburg. Prof. Dr. Michael Pregernig, the degree’s program director, emphasises: “The master’s program in Environmental Governance is one of the most diverse programs at the University of Freiburg due to the students’ diverse geographical and cultural backgrounds and will continue to drive the University’s internationalization in the future thanks to DAAD’s funding.”
About the M.Sc. Environmental Governance
The M.Sc. Environmental Governance program aims to enable students to recognize and understand problematic human-environment relationships. In addition, students learn to design and coordinate negotiation processes between the market, the state and civil society (i.e., governance) with the goal of sustainable development. The program’s focus is primarily on addressing current and potential environmental crises worldwide. Approximately 35 students are selected each year based on criteria of excellence and geographical representation (industrialized countries, countries in transition, developing countries as well as geographic regions). By 2023, the program has generated approximately 500 graduates from nearly 100 countries
DAAD scholarship application
In 2006, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) acknowledged the program as a Development-Related Postgraduate Course and thus offers a limited number of DAAD/EPOS scholarships. Scholarship applications are also currently being accepted for program participants for October 2024; applications are open until October 15, 2023.
