Sustainability Initiatives on Governors Island
The annual DWIH focus topic “Sustainable Innovations” encapsulates a broad range of applications, so the DWIH New York Team wanted to experience what this could look like on the ground. The team went on a field trip to Governors Island, located in the New York Upper Bay, to learn about local sustainability initiatives.
We met up with organizers of the “Billion Oyster Project” and “Circular Economy Manufacturing” to find out more about these innovative projects. And we were not disappointed: The Billion Oyster Project has been successfully working for years on restoring oyster reefs around New York Harbor through public education initiatives – and the intention to have lasting impact on the local ecosystem. Circular Economy Manufacturing is a start-up company that uses a portable, renewably powered MicroFactory to locally recycle single use plastic into durable eco-friendly products.
To find out more about these amazing initiatives, have a look at their websites, follow them on social media, or – when you are in New York – take a short ferry ride to see them in person. The DWIH team looks forward to hearing from you and your interest and work in sustainability and innovation or welcome you to one of our events.
