Breakfast Roundtable

The Transatlantic Science Diplomacy Breakfast Roundtable on German and American Opportunities and Perspectives in Science Diplomacy is a high-level discussion on the role of science diplomacy in fostering stronger transatlantic collaboration featuring the visiting DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) President Prof. Dr. Mukherjee.

The DAAD is the world’s largest funding organization for the international exchange of students and researchers. This year marks its 100th anniversary. Since it was founded in 1925, around 3 million scholars in Germany and abroad have received DAAD funding. It is a registered association, and its members are German institutions of higher education and student bodies. Its activities go far beyond simply awarding grants and scholarships. The DAAD supports the internationalization of German universities, promotes German studies and the German language abroad, supports countries in the Global South in building and improving their higher education systems and advises decision makers on education, foreign science, and development policy.

In July 2022, the DAAD released the position paper Science Diplomacy for a Multipolar World, which calls for a “new science diplomacy” that moves beyond value-based diplomacy to a more interest-driven realpolitik. The paper calls to address global crises, system rivalries, and regional challenges, with a focus on multilateralism and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing sustainability and intergenerational responsibility in an interconnected world.

In January 2024, the DAAD published its new DAAD Strategy 2030: Change by Exchange, which elaborates on its vision of shaping change through research and cross-border collaboration to address global challenges like climate change and geopolitical shifts.
